Introduction:
The online competition for attention is brutal, so the need for website speed is crucial — for user experience, SEO, and conversion rates. Many people would rather have a hole in the head than view a slow website! Recently, I worked on improving a client’s website that initially scored 35, 92, 57, and 85 on Google PageSpeed Insights. After a series of targeted optimizations, the scores jumped to an impressive 91, 91, 100, and 100. Yes, I do feel rather good about that.
What I did:
The improvements involved a combination of strategies, including:
- Optimizing images and using modern formats
- Implementing caching strategies
- Leveraging lazy loading for offscreen content
- Optimising CSS usage
- Deferring and delaying javascript loading
- Improving mobile usability and responsiveness
The results:
As the image below shows, after the optimisations, the website scored a fantastic 91, 91, 100, 100. I know some of you with sharp eyes will ask, “Why did the accessibility score go down from 92 to 91?” Well, sometimes when you push for excellence, Google likes to keep you humble. Point taken.
Why it matters:
Google favours fast-loading websites in its search rankings, and visitors expect snappy, smooth experiences. By significantly improving these scores, we helped ensure the website ranks better, loads faster, and delivers a seamless user experience — ultimately driving more engagement and conversions.
Takeaway:
If your website feels slow or isn’t performing well on speed tests, don’t ignore it. Even a few tweaks can make a huge difference.
