How I Reduced a 1-Hour Product Upload Job to 5 Minutes (and Improved SEO at the Same Time)

If you run an ecommerce store, you’ll know how time-consuming adding products can be.

Uploading images…
Resizing them…
Renaming them…
Adding them one by one…

Before you know it, an hour has gone.

Recently, I worked on a fashion website where we needed to upload a batch of new products. Instead of following the usual process, I set up a simple workflow that reduced the job from around an hour to just a few minutes, while also improving SEO and site performance.

Most businesses don’t realise this is possible.

The Problem Most Ecommerce Stores Have

When product images are uploaded manually, they are often:

  • Too large (slowing down the website)
  • Poorly named (e.g. IMG_1234.jpg)
  • Inconsistent sizes
  • Not optimised for web

This doesn’t just waste time — it also affects:

  • Page speed
  • User experience
  • Search engine visibility

The Simple Workflow That Changed Everything

Instead of editing each image manually, I created a process that automatically:

✔ Converts images to the correct colour profile
✔ Resizes them to the exact dimensions needed
✔ Compresses them for faster loading
✔ Sharpens them slightly for better product clarity
✔ Renames them using SEO-friendly filenames

So instead of this:

IMG_4821.jpg
IMG_4822.jpg
IMG_4823.jpg

We now get:

blue-linen-dress-02.jpg
blue-linen-dress-03.jpg

Why This Matters (More Than You Might Think)

🔍 Better SEO

Search engines can understand what your images are about.

⚡ Faster Website

Smaller, optimised images = quicker load times.

👕 Better Presentation

Consistent sizing and slight sharpening makes products look more professional.

⏱ Huge Time Saving

Processing dozens of images takes seconds instead of minutes.

Uploading Products Becomes Easy

Once the images are processed:

  1. Upload all images at once to the media library
  2. Duplicate an existing product
  3. Add the images
  4. Update the product details

Done.

For a batch of 18 products, this reduced the time dramatically.

The Bigger Picture

This isn’t just about saving time on one task.

It’s about creating a repeatable system that:

  • Removes manual work
  • Reduces errors
  • Improves consistency
  • Scales as your store grows

Final Thought

Most ecommerce businesses are still doing this the slow way.

If you’re uploading products manually and resizing images one-by-one, there’s a much better way to do it.

Most businesses don’t realise this is possible — but once it’s set up, it saves time every single time you add products.
