How to set up an email address

o how do I set up an email account? That depends on where you are going for your email. A number of companies, like Google (gmail.com) and Microsoft (live.com), offer free mailboxes on their domains. You choose a mailbox name which doesn’t already exist, and create the account with the company. Your mailbox name has to be unique at that domain, but can include letters and some other symbols. It’s quite common for people to use numbers and full stops in their mailbox name, for example, fredbloggs47 or fred.bloggs15. Lots of these free providers encourage you to add numbers to make it unique.

Things are a bit different if you are using your own domain name and want an official looking email address. In general, the company that registered the domain name for you will allow you to create mailboxes at that domain, and because only you can create those mailboxes, you are less likely to have to add numbers to make it unique. We don’t have a Fred Bloggs or a Joe Bloggs, so if either of those join the company, we can set up [email protected] or [email protected] Sometimes these mailboxes are included in the price you paid for setting up the domain name, other companies charge extra. However you create the mailbox, make sure the name is easy to write and spell correctly, and make sure you can remember it! Computers are very literal, and will refuse to deliver your email if you get a single letter wrong.
